SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL, an East Bay Open Mic is a monthly literary reading series, which makes its home at Nick’s Lounge in Berkeley on the last Saturday of every month from 7 to 9:30pm.SNS began in July of 2011 and has acquired a huge following and a reputation for being diverse, loud, gritty, sexy, supportive, inclusive, and loaded with local talent.
Each month we feature two kick-ass writers and about 20 open mic slots, as well as an optional writing theme. The new theme is announced at the end each month’s reading, and posted on our Facebook page. Some themes we’ve had in the past include: “juicy,” “bloody,” “dirty,” “naked,” “secrets,” “scars,” “change,” “hair,” and “the body.”
We’d love to hear your (three-minute) poems, stories, comedic sketches and occasional songs on our optional theme (or any topic).
The open mic list is first come first served. Sign-up starts at 7pm and closes when it fills up or when the reading starts. Sometimes the list is full by7:03pm, so get there early if you want to read!
A poem, a short story, a little stand-up routine – this could be your 3 minutes of fame! Or just listen, sip a tasty beverage, and clap when everyone else does, no pressure.
Each reader will have 3 minutes maximum. (Strictly enforced.)
For prose writers, this is about one and a half double-spaced pages.
As a side note, we have a special anniversary party every July and a hiatus every December.

Young’s breadth of work in the realm of sexuality spans from documenting our sexual culture in 40 feature length feminist pornographic films that have won numerous accolades including 6 feminist porn awards, numerous XBiz and AVN nominations and have been screened Internationally. Young speaks on the topics of feminist pornography, feminism & sexuality, and kink at universities including Yale University, Harvard University, Hampshire College, Northwestern University, and UC Berkeley. Her writings have been published in the Feminist Porn Studies Academic Journal as well as her recently released memoir, “Daddy”.
